FOUNDER'S WORDS
Dear members, I created UBC ICF with the help of my friends after my volunteering trip to South Africa. I always wanted to travel abroad for service work and I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to do so after my first year at UBC. While I was there, I was able to learn about their culture and get an insight on poverty, even though South Africa is one of the most westernized countries in Africa. I volunteered at a daycare in a little town called Capricorn and as my trip was coming closer to an end, we got a news from the principle that they lost the sponsor for their facility -- that meant they had to cut off some teachers and students. The daycare was like a home to them and some parents would send their children just so that they could be fed by the daycare. This was when I decided to create UBC ICF. First, the goal was to gather like minded students who are willing to spend their time outside of their lecture rooms to create fundraisers and raise money to help the daycare in South Africa. But now, UBC ICF has become a club on campus that also strives to raise money for local organizations.
